31st ANNUAL INDEPENDENT ENERGY HUMAN RESOURCES CONFERENCE

2019 IEHRA ANNUAL CONFERENCE
"As Me Too" Evolves, What's Next?

Oliver Bell, CEO Oliver Bell Inc.
As HR leaders, we can universally recognize that further fair treatment of individuals spurred on by the “#metoo” is long overdue.  Now that it’s here... what’s next?  How do we define appropriate behavior in employment terms for the policies we oversee?  How do we implement these policies?  What about the crossover effect and applicability/inapplicability of pop culture to workplace issues?  How could/should/will our co-workers (regardless of gender) interact going forward?  Can we identify positive potential outcomes and negative consequences of our projected actions?  There is no doubt organizations want an environment where every team member feels treated fairly while operating in competitive, upwardly mobile workplace.  We are evolving and getting better, but much has yet to be done.  Awareness is critical.  Sensitivity is important while simultaneously not be so thinned skinned that “everything is offensive.”  We suggest the ultimate goal should be an effective, rewarding workplace for all, not one where co-workers feel they may have to walk on pins and needles around their peers.  As leaders, we have to show that… “we get it!”  Our challenge is to update our organizational foundation to make these things possible.

“Employee Empowerment & Engagement"

Jason Lauritsen
Work has been defined in many ways over the years: a contract, a transaction, a value exchange. This led to describing humans as capital and designing systems that treat people like assets to be managed and optimized. Is it any wonder that employees’ feeling of engagement within these organizations continues to drop? It doesn’t feel good to be treated like an investment to be maximized.

To reverse this trend requires that we understand what work is for employees, a relationship, and a critically important one. Research has shown us that employees crave the same things from work that they do from other important relationships in their lives: appreciation, connection, acceptance, communication, and support. In this session, we will explore how designing the employee experience through the lens of a healthy relationship will focus your employee engagement efforts for greater impact.

"ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS"

As an Energy Recruiter, we have many commonalities – we promote the company/client we work for, engage in countless interviews to qualify candidates for multiple positions, onboard and layoff candidates, deliver good and bad news, keep up with current market data, and much more. We are the connectors between people and people are our most important assets.  Companies spend a lot of money on recruiting, retention and training, so wouldn’t it make sense to have strategies designed to produce positive, effective and practical tips that empower others?
